School Council News, by Mrs Muddy

Date: 18th Nov 2022 @ 8:00pm

This week the School Council met with Mrs Henshall to review their work so far and agree next steps for the council.

The children are meeting with Mrs Ellison from Cheshire East in a few weeks to discuss mental health and what we want to see as support for children in Alsager

We voted on the charities we want to support as a school, this is after the children have consulted with their classes so that everyone had a voice. The charities agreed so far were;
Autumn term;
Alsager Foodbank (Harvest), Royal British Legion for Remembrance Day and Save the Children for Christmas Jumper Day (Thursday 8th December)
Spring term;
Cheshire Downs Syndrome on Downs Syndrome Day (March 21st 2023), Breast Cancer UK
Summer term will be agreed after Christmas.

The children have received a letter and some resources from Fiona Bruce MP about Parliament and will be taking part in an online Parliament tour in a few weeks. We have invited her to visit school and are waiting for a response.

The children are also writing to Mrs Woollam to share the ideas that their classes have proposed to improve our school further. The children have really enjoyed having a voice, not only in or school but also within our local community.

Status Quo visit and Drumming lessons at Highfields!, by Mrs Muddy

Date: 17th Nov 2022 @ 10:30am

Some of our children have been developing their drumming skills with our drumming teacher every Tuesday. If you would like more information please contact school at admin@alsagerhighfields.cheshire.sch.uk

Jeff Rich, from Status Quo, will be visiting Highfields in December to share his amazing drum workshops, he will deliver a masterclass to a range of pupils and staff, we are all very excited to meet him.

This exciting visit follows on from our wonderful visit last year from Paul Sturgess, who showed that being different is amazing. He talked to the children about his struggle with being different as a child and how once he had embraced his difference, he worked hard to achieve the amazing success he has had all over the world.

We are continuously supporting our children to believe in themselves. We firmly believe that if you can see it, you can be it! Our vision and values are that together we nurture, believe, achieve, succeed for each and every one of us.

Anti-bullying Week News, by Mrs Muddy

Date: 17th Nov 2022 @ 9:31am

This week is Anti-bullying week and each day in assembly and in class we have explored bullying and the impact on others.  Yesterday we talked about why we might bully someone and the difference between bullying and being unkind, neither of which are acceptable. The children had brilliant ideas of how to respond, to reach out and help if someone was struggling with being unkind, being bullied and even if someone was being a bully.
The children a few weeks ago nominated a member of staff who they feel goes above and beyond in our anti-bullying work in school and when the email form the Anti-Bullying Alliance came back they said they had never had a school who made so many nominations!
Yesterday many of the children got to present the certificates to the adults, they shook their hand and congratulated them on the brilliant difference they make. It was another proud moment at Highfields.  Some of the children also took photographs of the staff nominated.

PSHE - Family discussion, by Mrs Muddy

Date: 11th Nov 2022 @ 9:24pm

Today in PSHE our children in year 3 discussed and explored different kinds of families with Mrs Henshall. There were some great discussions and the children all showed kindness, thoughtfulness and curiosity.  We watched the Disney 2021 Christmas advert where a step family come together and then the Disney 2022 one which shows a year later and a new family addition. We also watched the John Lewis advert where a family are welcoming a new foster child into their lives. The children agreed that all families are different and that as long as we care for each other it doesn’t matter what they look like

Junior Safeguarding Team, by Mrs Muddy

Date: 15th Oct 2022 @ 9:09pm

Today our Junior Safeguarding Team met with Mrs Henshall. They discussed safety at school and all shared lots of ideas for helping our school to be safe. One of the discussions was around energy saving and environmental awareness, keeping our world safe and keeping energy bills low. We agreed that the team would take on the role of Eco Ambassadors to help to raise awareness for our energy saving like turning off lights and keeping doors closed to save energy and reduce bills. We decided that the money we save on bills we will spend on lots of new books for our library.
The children discussed Road Safety Week 2022  14th to 20th november and wanted to do something amazing to raise awraeness as well as Bonfire Night and firewroks safety. They decided they would like to run a poster competitiion which will be launched in assembly next week with prizes. We will post more details next week.

School Council and Junior Safeguarding Team News, by Mrs Muddy

Date: 4th Oct 2022 @ 10:11am

Yesterday our Junior Safeguarding Team and School Council representatives met with Lucie Ferneyhough
Community Development Officer from the Cheshire East Council. Our children have important roles in shaping our school and being the voice for their peer groups to ensure everyone has the opportunity to contribute towards important decisions about our school community. Lucy explained her role working across Cheshire East with many organisations to help to improve outcomes for children and families, especially around mental health and wellbeing and the cost of living crisis. She finished our session by asking the children, 'How can I help?'. Over this term our representatives will be speaking to their classes to find out what we can do to improve our school and we will feed this back to Lucy around funding/grants we can apply for and what we would like for our school to be the best it can be. It was a fabulous session and the children asked great questions and listened well, representing themselves brilliantly as always.
