Welcome to Year 6!
Welcome to Year 6! It’s your final year at Alsager Highfields and we’re going to make sure it’s a great one! There are lots of exciting activities and events planned for the year (including our London residential), and of course, we have lots of learning to do too. Year 6 is a really important year as it is the last time you will be together as a class, working in the ‘primary’ way before you leave for high school. It comes with extra responsibilities as the rest of the school will look to you to set the example and act as role models, but it’s also a year full of celebration of all that you have achieved.
Please remember, the school day starts at 8.45am and ends at 3.15pm. It is crucial that you are on time everyday so that you do not miss any learning during our morning activities, as these will begin at 8.50 each day, following registration.
So, Class of 2026, let’s be the best versions of ourselves, give it all we’ve got, and make this a fantastic year of learning, friendship and smiles!

English Our whole class text this term will be 'When the night falls' by Phil Earle, which links beautifully to our WWII unit.
In our lessons, we will begin the term by composing narratives based on 'Journey', a wordless picture book by Aaron Becker. We will focus on applying previous learning, in particular dialogue and varied sentence structures. Following this, we will move onto our punctuation and grammar focus using the Grammarsaurus approach of the Place Value of Punctuation and Grammar, ready to apply our learning to future writing opportunities. We will also recap previous punctuation and grammar with a daily warm up. This can be supported by Rollama, which you can access at home as much as you like; this will really help you throughout the year. For spelling, we will be using the Place Value of Spelling and investigating the morphology of words to support accurate spelling. Children can access the online game 'Morphs' via the Grammarsaurus website, which ensures they are practising the areas of spelling which they find most difficult. Guided reading will continue as before, in small groups, where we will explore and develop different reading skills, answering a range of questions. When the children are not reading in a group, they have time to read their book and then complete a quiz. The children are also welcome to read non-fiction books and our weekly newspaper, First News. Please see your child's Reading Diary for their current ZPD level; this is reassessed at the end of each half-term. |

Maths Each day, our Maths lessons begin with a focus on improving our fluency in arithmetic and times tables knowledge, as well as completing some transition activities provided by the high school. In Maths we follow MNP, and we will begin the year by focsuing on place value and number. The scheme of work for MNP can be found below. Homework will be sent out on a Friday and must be completed by the following Wednesday. You are welcome to come to an optional Homework Club at the beginning fo lunch on a Tuesday, should you wish to complete some of your homework independently in school. If you do not complete your homework, you will miss part of your lunch on a Wednesday, and will need to complete your homework at home for the following day.

I understand each year group is a little different and that you may have questions. Hopefully the information below will help, but please feel free to pop a note in your child’s reading diary and ask them to show me, catch me at the classroom door at the end of the day, message me via Seesaw or send an email via the school office and I will get back to you as soon as I am able. Seesaw will be the main form of commincation for all matters related to Y6, so it is really important that you check regularly for any updates. Emails will only be sent for matters involving multiple year groups, whole school information, and items requiring payments.
The Y6 curriculum: there is a link at the bottom of this page to the Y6 curriculum overview, which outlines the learning for the year. Some of the texts may change based on new publications and the class’ interests. You will also find a document outlining the national expectations for Y6; of course some children will be working below or above these statements, but I am sure it will be a helpful guide. I have also attached the Y5/6 spellings that it is expected all Y6 children know and apply to their independent writing in order be assessed at the ‘expected standard’. This runs alongside the weekly spelling activities we will complete both in class and as homework, so please practise these as often as you can with your child.
PE: PE will take place on Monday during the Autumn term and this will be our swimming day. Children should come dressed in their PE kits as in previous years. As swimming takes the full afternoon, with a fast-paced walk to and from the leisure centre, this is our only regular PE slot during the autumn term, however, children should also come in their PE kits on a Friday, so that I am able to put in an extra PE session on the weeks where the timetable allow it. Once we have completed our swimming allocation, we will revert to 2 seperate PE sessions each week.
Snacks and water bottles: please ensure children bring a healthy snack for breaktime and a named water bottle (no juice) to drink from throughout the day.
Reading: Please ensure your child reads every day at home, as this will have an incredible impact on not just their reading ability, but all areas of learning both now and in the future. As an absolute minimum, children must read at least 4 times a week as part of their homework (increasing to every day between January and May), and they must record their reading in their reading diary. Please sign their diary at the end of every week (I will do so during their Guided Reading slot during the week). If your child needs to take a quiz on their book, they can access this via the Accelerated Reader link towards the bottom of the page. Please see the front of your child’s planner for further guidance.
