Intent
At Alsager Highfields Primary School, we believe that science helps children make sense of the fascinating world around them. Through exciting, practical and purposeful experiences, we encourage children to be curious, ask questions and develop a desire to find out more. Our science curriculum builds knowledge and scientific skills progressively, enabling children to explore ideas, investigate the world around them and develop the confidence to think and work like scientists. In doing so, we aim to nurture a lifelong interest in science and equip every child with the knowledge and skills they need to understand and engage with the world around them.
Implementation
At Alsager Highfields, we aim to make learning interactive, engaging and memorable. In Science, this is achieved through well-sequenced lessons that encourage children to retrieve and build upon previous learning, while developing and remembering new knowledge. Key scientific vocabulary is modelled and revisited regularly, helping children to become familiar and confident with the language of science.
We make learning memorable through exciting and purposeful experiences that bring science to life. These may include trips to the Science Museum in Wrexham, visits to the High School to experience a science laboratory or visitors to school, such as animal keepers. Our children love Science!
Each week, children learn new scientific knowledge and develop their scientific skills through hands-on, engaging lessons. Our curriculum is carefully planned so that knowledge and skills are developed progressively, enabling children to make connections, deepen their understanding and remember what they have learned.
We also provide opportunities for children to explore science beyond the classroom. We have participated in The Young People’s Book Prize, which promotes reading and encourages young people to discover more about science through books. Every other year, we host Science Week, giving children additional opportunities to explore, investigate and celebrate the fascinating world of science.
Impact
Our Science curriculum enables children at Alsager Highfields to explore and understand the world around them. Through developing a curious mind, children are encouraged to ask questions and use scientific skills to observe, explore, investigate and find answers.
Assessment is based on learning outcomes closely linked to the National Curriculum, alongside ongoing teacher assessment and professional judgement. Our engagement with the local environment provides children with varied, first-hand experiences that help them apply their scientific knowledge and skills to the world around them.
Pupils at Alsager Highfields will:
