Welcome to Year 3 — the children are now officially juniors and we have lots to look forward to!

Year 3 is an exciting year as the children begin a new chapter in their school journey. We will be encouraging them to become more independent, responsible and confident learners as they settle. There will be lots of exciting learning opportunities throughout the year, with a particular focus on developing their reading, writing and mathematical skills, as well as exploring some fantastic topics across the wider curriculum.

Autumn

Below is some useful information about the school day, as well as a curriculum overview for this term. Please take a look at the information and if you have any questions, please let us know.

The school day will begin at 8.45am and finish at 3.15pm. Please try to be punctual as this helps the children to settle quickly and ensures that we can make the most of our learning time.

We are looking forward to a fantastic year together and can't wait to see the children grow in confidence, independence and enthusiasm for learning!

English

We will begin the term with PVPG, helping the children to develop their understanding of sentence structure and the key skills needed to become confident writers. These skills will be revisited and developed throughout the year and applied across our English lessons and the wider curriculum. We will then use these skills to write a non-chronological report, giving the children the opportunity to organise information clearly and use a range of sentence structures and vocabulary.

We will also introduce the children to Guided Reading. These sessions take place in small groups, where we will read and discuss a text together and develop a range of important reading skills. We will practise skills such as retrieving information, making predictions, understanding new vocabulary and explaining our ideas using evidence from the text. When children are not working with an adult during Guided Reading, they will have time to read independently and complete a quiz linked to their book.

Maths

Each day, our Maths lessons begin with a focus on improving our fluency in arithmetic. We will develop the children's understanding of place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions, measure, shape and problem-solving, building their confidence and encouraging them to explain their mathematical thinking.

General Information:

PE

PE will take place on Tuesday and Friday afternoons this term. Please ensure that your child comes into school wearing their full PE kit, clearly labelled, on these days. A reminder that our PE kit consists of our PE top, shorts and black trainers; if it is cold, joggers are allowed. 

Snacks:

As always can we please remind parents that if you wish to provide a break time snack for your child it should be something healthy such as fruit.  There is always fruit available if your child forgets their snack. The children can bring in their own water bottle daily which must only have water (not juice) in.

Reading:

Please read with your child daily as this will have an impact on all areas of their learning.  It is expected that children read at least 4 times a week. Please record this in their reading planner. We would like you to sign your child's diary at the end of the week so that you and we know that this is happening. Reading diaries will be signed weekly when your child has their Guided Reading Session. Reading diaries are checked daily.

Reading so often, every day, both at home and at school, should enable your child to take a book quiz within two weeks - sometimes perhaps three. We will continue to encourage the children to ensure that they can take the appropriate number of quizzes.

Homework

This will be sent home weekly on a Friday and is now expected to be completed by the following Thursday. It can be found outlined on our Brain Builder (clicking on the pencil below). 

Seesaw

Seesaw has also proven to be an excellent way of sharing information about the school day, sharing any announcements, and most importantly, pictures of your children in action at school. Please make sure you can still access this or are signed up. Seesaw will be the main form of contacting us both if you have any questions relating to our class.
