Year 5 - Mrs Dyde & Mrs Ely 2025 - 2026
Mrs Dyde
Mrs Ely
Hello everyone, and welcome back. A Happy New Year to you all. We hope that so far you've had a great time in Year 5, and we aim to continue this, making your year memorable and enjoyable. There are still plenty of enrichment activities planned that build on our curriculum, including visits or workshops, and of course, later in the year the Y5/6 production. We have looked closely at the curriculum and planned a range of exciting learning opportunities throughout our topics, so hopefully, there is something for everyone.
You can find the overview for Year 5 on the Annual Curriculum Plan. This will give you an idea of all the things we will be doing; however, occasionally, this may change throughout each term, depending on interests and new or exciting texts found. You will also find a document which outlines the national expectations for Year 5, and whilst some children may be working above or slightly below these expectations, we hope it provides you with a guide as to the aim for the end of the year. On our class page, you will also find weekly updates giving an outline plan for the week, and this will include the homework set. There will also be notices posted on our class page when appropriate.

As a reminder, our school day begins at 8:45 a.m. and finishes at 3:15 p.m. We would ask that your child arrive at school on time, ready and prepared for the day ahead. Arriving at school at 8:40 is a great way to start the day.
Our class book this term is Kensuke's Kingdom
As we read this book, we will explore the theme of frienship and survival.
Washed up on an island in the Pacific, Michael struggles to survive on his own. With no food and no water, he curls up to die. When he wakes there is a plate beside him of fish, of fruit and there is a bowl of fresh water. He is not alone ...

Keeping you up to date with our Learning Journey

English - We will continue to review grammatical terminology or punctuation, and spelling in warm-up activities daily using Rollama or Grammarsaurus. Rollama is also available to access at home. This will ensure that we review the learning that took place throughout our Grammar Unit in the Autumn Term.
Our focus in writing this term is to explore non-chronological reports, write short narratives and first person diary entries based on events read in the book.
Guided reading will continue as before, in small groups, where we will explore and develop different reading skills, answering a range of questions. When the children are not reading in a group, they have time to read their own book and then complete a quiz. The children are also welcome to read non-fiction books and our monthly newspaper, First News.
The children have recently completed a new Star reading test, so their new reading level is in their diary. Please do check that they are reading books within their level and encourage daily reading.
Maths - Each day, our Maths lessons begin with a focus on improving our fluency in arithmetic and times tables knowledge. In Maths, we follow MNP. An outline of this can be found in the files below.
Foundation Subjects and Science- Please see our curriculum overview, which can be found below.
Reading
Well done to all of our word millionaires. This is a fabulous achievement.
Many more of you are creeping ever closer to this amazing word count, and you are doing so well. Each of you has your own small target, which we know you are trying really hard to achieve. Well done, and keep this up.
Please continue to encourage your child to read and record their home reading. There is an expectation that the children will read at least 5 times a week at home. This will be measured from Friday to Friday. In Year 5, we encourage the children to be more independent and record their own reading in their reading diaries wherever possible; however, we would like you to sign your child's diary at the end of the week so that you and we know that this is happening - this is greatly appreciated.
Reading diaries will be checked daily and signed weekly when your child has their Guided Reading Session. Reading so often, every day, both at home and at school, should enable your child to take a book quiz within two weeks - sometimes perhaps three. We will continue to encourage the children to ensure that they can take the appropriate number of quizzes. I know some have previously achieved word millionaire, and we look forward to seeing just how many words the children can read and who can reach the millionaire status this year.

You can also find this as a file at the bottom of the page.
Homework
This will usually be sent home every week on a Friday, but is expected to be completed by the following Thursday. It can be found outlined on our Brain Builder (clicking on the pencil above), which will be added to our class page weekly. It will consist of spellings and times tables to focus on; Maths, which will be set online using Doodle (or provided on sheets), and Grammar skills, which can be completed using Rollama or again will be provided on sheets. The children will have homework folders for any sheets. We will then check the results.
If your child is finding it difficult to complete the homework or experiencing difficulty in accessing online homework, then please do let us know. There is an optional homework club provided on Wednesday if children wish to complete some of their homework at school. Any incomplete homework will result in the children staying in during lunchtime to complete it.
Reminders
Seesaw
Seesaw has also proven to be an excellent way of sharing information about the school day, sharing any announcements, and most importantly, pictures of your children in action at school. Please make sure you can still access this or are signed up. Seesaw will be the main form of contacting us both if you have any questions relating to our class, Year 5. For whole school information or items requiring payments, this will be communicated through emails as before.
PE and PPA
This half term, we have PE sessions on Thursday and Friday, so please remember to come to school in the correct PE kit. Our PPA is on Thursday afternoon this half term, which is when the children will have a sports session from ASM and be taught a foundation subject by Mrs Hancock. There are some children who will continue to swim this term and so PE kit is allowed to be worn on a Monday for those children. They also need to remember their full swimming kit.
Water bottles
Please ensure your child brings their water bottle to school every day and that it is clearly identifiable. The children should bring in sufficient water to ensure that they have access to refreshments during the day, which keeps them hydrated.
Equipment
Please also make sure your child brings in what is necessary for school, which includes their reading diary and reading book daily, lunch boxes if required, and water bottles. All of these will return home each day. They may also bring a healthy snack.
If you have any questions relating to any aspect of school life, please do not hesitate to contact us. We can be contacted through the school office using the email address below or through Seesaw.
