Mrs Matthew's Class- Year 4 2025 - 2026
Mrs Matthew
Autumn 1
Welcome to Year 4! I hope you’ve had a wonderful and restful six-week break and are feeling ready for the exciting year ahead. On our class page, you’ll find weekly updates that outline our plan for the week, including the homework set, as well as any important notices. I’m looking forward to making this school year both memorable and enjoyable, with enrichment activities that bring our curriculum to life—such as workshops, visits, and of course, our exciting residential trip to Quinta!
We place great importance on open communication so should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to get in touch by speaking to me at the end of the day or through Seesaw. I aim to reply to messages within two working days.
Just a quick reminder that our school day runs from 8:45 am to 3:15 pm. We kindly ask that your child arrives on time, ready and prepared for the day ahead. Arriving at 8:40 am gives them a calm and settled start which then helps them get the most out of their day.
Our General Information about school life in Y4 is at the bottom of the page.

English: We will begin each day with warm-up activities focusing on grammar, punctuation, and spelling, using Rollama—a resource that’s also available for use at home. To begin we will be exploring the book 'Gorilla' by Anthony Browne. We will be focusing on descriptive writing for both the characters and setting. Guided reading sessions will continue in small groups, where we will focus on developing a range of reading skills and answering different types of questions. When not working in a group, children will have independent reading time, followed by a quiz related to their book. They are also encouraged to read non-fiction texts and our monthly newspaper, First News. |
Maths: Each day, our Maths lessons begin with a focus on improving our fluency in arithmetic and times tables knowledge. In Maths we follow MNP, and to being we will be focusing on place value, recognising and writing numbers up to 1000. The scheme of work for MNP can be found below. |
Foundation Subjects and Science: Please see our curriculum overview which can be found below.
General Information: PE: PE will be Monday and Wednesday this half term. If there are any changes these will be uploaded to the website and announced on Seesaw. Please ensure children come to school in their PE kit on these days. As the weather is fluctuating, children should wear the appropriate PE kit. A reminder that our PE kit consists of a coloured t-shirt along with the school logo, shorts and black trainers; if it is cold, joggers are allowed. Snacks: As always, can we please remind parents that if you wish to provide a break time snack for your child it should be something healthy such as fruit and something appropriate in size. There is always fruit available if your child forgets their snack. The children can bring in their own water bottle daily which must only have water (not juice) in. Reading: Please read with your child daily as this will have an impact on all areas of their learning. It is expected that children read at least 4 times a week. Please feel free to record their reading in their planner. We would like you to sign your child's diary at the end of the week so that you and we know that this is happening. Reading diaries will be signed weekly when your child has their Guided Reading Session. Reading diaries are checked daily. Reading so often, every day, both at home and at school, should enable your child to take a book quiz within two weeks - sometimes perhaps three. We will continue to encourage the children to ensure that they can take the appropriate number of quizzes. Seesaw: Seesaw is an excellent resource that many of you are familiar with already. Please ensure you are signed up as soon as possible as I will be sharing pictures of the children, information about the school day and any announcements. It is also the best way to contact me if you wish to discuss any matters relating to any aspect of school life. I aim to reply within 48 hours. If you have any questions regarding Seesaw, please speak to me at the end of the school day. Homework: This will be sent home weekly on a Friday and is now expected to be completed by the following Thursday. It can be found outlined on our Brain Builder (clicking on the pencil below). Homework club will be offered to all children on a Tuesday lunch time. |
