Mrs Dyde & Miss Baggaley's Class - Year 5 2025 - 2026
Mrs Dyde
Mrs Baggaley
Hello everyone, and welcome back to school. We are so looking forward to you all returning and to an exciting time in Year 5. We hope to make your year memorable and enjoyable; one with enrichment activities that build on our curriculum, including visits or workshops, and of course, the Y5/6 production. We have looked closely at the curriculum and planned a range of exciting learning opportunities throughout our topics, so hopefully, there is something for everyone.
You can find the overview for the year for Year 5 on the Annual Curriculum Plan. This will give you an idea of all the things we will be doing; however, occasionally, this may be subject to change throughout each term, depending on interests and texts encountered. You will also find a document which outlines the national expectations for Year 5, and whilst some children may be working above or slightly below these expectations, we hope it provides you with a guide as to the aim for the end of the year. On our class page, you will also find weekly updates giving an outline plan for the week, and this will include the homework set. There will also be notices posted on our class page when appropriate.
Enriching our Curriculum.

As a reminder, our school day begins at 8:45 a.m. and finishes at 3:15 p.m. We would ask that your child arrive at school on time, ready and prepared for the day ahead. Arriving at school at 8:40 is a great way to start the day.
Our class book this half term is Ember Spark and the Thunder of Dragons by Abi Elphinstone
As we read this book, we will explore Ember's World of magical beasts and daring adventures.
Rusty Fizzbang, vet to magical beasts, needs an apprentice. Ember Spark, looking for adventure, is his newest recruit. But keeping dragons and unicorns a secret is no easy task, especially with arch-villain, Jasper Hornswoggle, on your tail ...
Keeping you up to date with our Weekly Learning Journey

Week Beginning 1st September 2025
English - We will review grammatical terminology or punctuation, and spelling in warm-up activities using Rollama. This is also available to access at home.
This week we will be exploring the film trailer for Brave and writing our own voice over for the trailer focusing on descriptive writing for both the character and setting.
Guided reading will continue as before, in small groups, where we will explore and develop different reading skills, answering a range of questions. When the children are not reading in a group, they have time to read their book and then complete a quiz. The children are also welcome to read non-fiction books and our monthly newspaper, First News.
The children will complete their Star reading Assessment on their return to school to ensure they have accurate levels from which to choose their books. Their level will be in their reading diary.
Maths - Each day, our Maths lessons begin with a focus on improving our fluency in arithmetic and times tables knowledge.
In Maths we follow MNP, and this week we will be focusing on place value, recognising and writing numbers up to 1,000,000.
Science - This half term we focus on Materials and their properties. We begin by comparing and grouping materials based on their properties.
Geography - We begin the year by exploring the biomes of deserts. We will explore biomes around the world and how a desert is classified due to its features.
History - Not this half term
Art - This half term, we will be looking at lettering and how people may have illuminated letters in different styles.
Music - This term, we will be exploring rhythm, identifying the rhythm, and building rhythmic layers. We will be using percussion instruments and djembe drums as well as exploring notation or rhythm grids. We begin by identifying different rhythms.
ICT - This half term, we will be looking at how ICT systems share information to help with processing requests.
RE - This half term, we will be looking at religious freedoms and how or why people stand up for what they believe in. We begin by exploring terminology associated with beliefs.
French - This half term, we will be looking at language, talking about ourselves and our school subjects. We begin by being able to introduce ourselves.
PSHE - Our focus this half term is on families and relationships. We begin by looking at how we build friendships and how we resolve dilemmas.
PE- PE (TBC) will be on Thursday and Friday for this half term. The children should come in P.E. kit as usual, and they will be taking part in invasion games, including football and basketball.
Reading
Please continue to encourage your child to read and record their home reading. There is an expectation that the children will read at least 4 times a week at home. In Year 5 we encourage the children to be more independent and record their own reading in their reading diaries wherever possible, however, we would like you to sign your child's diary at the end of the week so that you and we know that this is happening - this is greatly appreciated.
Reading diaries will be checked daily and signed weekly when your child has their Guided Reading Session. Reading so often, every day, both at home and at school, should enable your child to take a book quiz within two weeks - sometimes perhaps three. We will continue to encourage the children to ensure that they can take the appropriate number of quizzes. I know there are some who have previously achieved word millionaire and we look forward to seeing just how many words the children can read and who can reach the millionaire status this year.
Homework
This will usually be sent home every week on a Friday, but is expected to be completed by the following Thursday. It can be found outlined on our Brain Builder (clicking on the pencil above), which will be added to our class page weekly. It will consist of spellings and times tables to focus on; Maths, which will be set online using Doodle (or provided on sheets), and Grammar skills, which can be completed using Rollama. We will then check the results.
If your child is finding it difficult to complete the homework or experiencing difficulty in accessing online homework, then please do let us know. There is an optional homework club provided on Wednesday if children wish to complete some of their homework at school. Any incomplete homework will result in the children staying in during lunchtime to complete it.
Reminders
Seesaw
Seesaw has also proven to be an excellent way of sharing information about the school day, sharing any announcements, and most importantly pictures of your children in action at school. Please make sure you can still access this or are signed up. Seesaw will be the main form of contacting us both if you have any questions relating to our class, Year 5. For whole school information or items requiring payments this will communicated through emails as before.
PE and PPA
This half term we have PE sessions on Thursdays and Fridays, so please remember to come to school in the correct PE kit. Our PPA is Monday afternoon this half term which will be covered by Mrs Hancock who will teach Art and French.
Water bottles
Please ensure your child brings their water bottle to school every day and that it is clearly identifiable. The children should bring in sufficient water to ensure that they have access to refreshments during the day, which keeps them hydrated.
Equipment
Please also make sure your child brings in what is necessary for school, which includes their reading diary and reading book daily, lunch boxes if required, and water bottles. All of these will return home each day. They may also bring a healthy snack.
If you have any questions relating to any aspect of school life, please do not hesitate to contact us. We can be contacted through the school office using the email address below or through Seesaw.
