Spring 1

Hello and welcome to Year 3! I hope you’ve had a brilliant Christmas and you are feeling refreshed and ready for all the fun and learning we’ve got planned. On our class page, you’ll be able to see what we’ll be covering this term, homework tasks, and stay up to date with any key information. I’m really excited to get started!

We value open communication and are here to assist you in any way we can. Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us through Seesaw.

General information:

As a reminder, our school day begins at 8:45 a.m. and finishes at 3:15 p.m. We would ask that your child arrive at school on time, ready and prepared for the day ahead. Arriving at school at 8:40 is a great way to start the day.

Please remember to label all your child's belongings, including their uniform, bags, and lunchboxes. This helps us ensure that lost items can be easily returned to their rightful owners. We appreciate your assistance in this matter.

Reading:

Please continue to encourage your children to read at home at least 4 times per week, this is apart of the school homework policy. It would be fantastic if you could continue to sign your child's diary at the end of the week once they have read 4 times. Reading diaries will be checked weekly when your child has their Guided Reading Session.  Please remember children can quiz at home the using the accelerated reader link.

Weekly learning journey

Spring

Wednesday 14th January 2025 Year 3 Egyptian Workshop

English

This term, our English lessons will be inspired by the beautiful story The Winter’s Child. We’ll use the book as a springboard for a range of exciting writing activities, including:

  • ✏️ Instructional writing – for example, How to Build a Snowman

  • 🧊 Character descriptions

  • ❄️ Setting descriptions inspired by the wintry world of the story

To strengthen our skills, we’ll also begin each lesson with a daily grammar starter, helping us build confidence and familiarity with our key vocabulary.

Every Friday, we will dedicate time to developing our handwriting skills. This will include practising letter formation, improving fluency, and building confidence in presenting our written work neatly and accurately.

Maths

Each day, our Maths lessons begin with a focus on improving our fluency in arithmetic and times tables knowledge.

We follow the MNP (Maths — No Problem!) scheme. To start the term, we will be focusing on multiplication and division, gradually progressing towards using short multiplication and short division methods.

Here are some great sites for practising timetables.

Hit the Button.   Hit the Button - Quick fire maths practise for 6-11 year olds.

Timestables -  https://www.timestables.co.uk/

Topmarks - https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/7-11-years/times-tables

On Wednesday mornings, Mrs Millichap will be teaching Maths, focusing on our Money unit. During this topic, children will learn to recognise coins and notes, count amounts, and solve simple money problems.

Any extra practise at home—especially counting coins and making different amounts—would be greatly appreciated and will help reinforce their learning in class.

PE

This half term we have PE sessions on Tuesdays and Fridays. As the weather continues to change, we want to ensure the children stay comfortable and ready to enjoy their outdoor PE sessions. Please make sure they come to school in their full, appropriate PE kit on those days.
